Benefits

One of the major benefits of wood pellet bedding is a predicted 40-60%

reduction in waste material (soiled bedding) that is generated.

A wood pellet bed is highly absorbent and soaks up urine rapidly, creating a

confined wet spot which can be easily removed.

Additionally, wood pellets give enhanced compostability over traditional bedding

which means that a higher proportion of manure to bedding can be removed

from the loose box to go to the compost heap. Environmentally, this can be

seen as a positive step in reducing the volume of waste material produced.

Manure can be sifted out easily from the bedding so the time taken to clean the

loose box is greatly reduced due to the fact you are not removing good bedding

with the soiled bedding. This in turn leads to savings in material costs.

Manufactured in the South West or UK sourced (not imported). Our 6mm wood pellets are produced using softwood residues from our own and other UK based sawmills. All our pellets comply with the CEN/TS14961 standards.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

(Based on a 3.6m x 3.6m loose box).

8-10 bags of Ecowood Bedding per 3.6m x 3.6m loose box is

recommended (13.6kg bags).

STEP 1 - Thoroughly clean out the loose box down to the floor.

STEP 2 - Open bags and add approx. 4.5 litres (1 gallon) of water per bag.

STEP 3 - After several minutes the pellets will break-down into a “fluffy” consistency.

STEP 4 - Empty the bags and spread evenly throughout the stall to a depth

of 10-12cm.

Add one bag of new pellets each week to compensate for the soiled

bedding removed. These should be scattered evenly and do not need to be

wetted down when they are added. It is common practice to strip down the

loose boxes every two - three months, instead of weekly, thereby saving a

considerable amount of waste volume and significantly reducing the cost of

bedding and labour.

Q & A’s

WHAT ARE BEDDING PELLETS? Ecowood bedding pellets are produced by compressing course sawdust through holes in a metal ring. Friction generated during manufacture creates heat that in turn releases the natural lignums within the dust to act as a glue.	HOW DOES IT WORK? By adding fresh water to the pellets, they are softened into an absorbent bedding for the horse which is both dry and comfortable.
CAN USING WOOD PELLETS FOR BEDDING SAVE TIME? Because the solid manure separates so easily, less time is spent removing the soiled bedding from the stable compared with traditional beddings. The urine saturated areas should be removed in their entirety.	ARE WOOD PELLETS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN TRADITIONAL BEDDINGS LIKE WOOD SHAVINGS AND STRAW? If you consider that each 13.6kg bag is equivalent to about 1.5 bales of shavings, you can easily calculate the savings to be made in material costs. Additionally, it is expected that you will reduce your labour costs by 30-50% as bedding is added just once a week and only wet bedding and manure is removed.
ARE BEDDING PELLETS THE SAME SELECTED QUALITY AS FUEL PELLETS? Our pellets are produced from clean softwoods specifically for animal bedding (not hardwoods which can have harmful toxins in them) and differ from wood pellets supplied for burning as fuel on wood pellet stoves.	WILL MY HORSE EAT THE PELLETS? Bedding pellets taste and smell like wood, so most horses will immediately recognise this and not eat the pellet. If you are concerned ensure the pellets are completely processed before the horse enters the stable by spraying more water on the pellets and turning them with a fork until they are broken down.
HOW MANY 13.6kg BAGS WILL I NEED FOR A 3.6m x3.6m LOOSE BOX? A 3.6m x 3.6m loose box will require 8-10 (13.6kg) bags and you should not have to add additional bags for 2 weeks. After 1 bag a week should be sufficient to replenish the soiled bedding removed.	CAN ECOWOOD BEDDING BE USED FOR OTHER ANIMAL BEDDING? Ecowood bedding can be used for poultry, cattle and cat litter to provide the same benefits.
